Galatians 5:1: For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
We are slaves in this world to something. They say that the world has more slavery today than at any other time in history. With sex trafficking and child labor, its hard to really fathom what that is like. But if we look at what Paul talks about in Galatians 5, that’s not exactly what he’s saying. We are slaves to sin. We have been slaves to sin since we have been born. When I was a growing up, I went to church and did the whole thing Sunday mornings, but outside of that, everything was fair game. When you’re older and you look back, you start to realize that at the time what felt good, wasn’t worth the consequences in the end.
Think about what you are a slave to today. Can you give that up to Jesus and ask him for freedom?
We can have all kinds of baggage in our lives and it can weigh heavy on us. You wake up thinking about those mistakes, or think that “church” people aren’t gonna want to have anything to do with you because of your past. Or you are on the other side, you grew up in the church, been a good person, good christian, but you just feel like you need to “do” in order to receive Gods love. See that’s the gnarliest thing, Jesus doesn’t want us to be slaves to our past or to what we can do for him. He looks at us with love and grace.
No matter what we were slaves to, maybe failed relationships, drugs, sex etc. it could be anything. Jesus is saying cast it on him and throw off those chains of sin and walk in the freedom only he can give. It’s like having someone come give you your pardon before the end of your prison time is up. That person is paying your debts, stepping in and saying load me up with what hes got, Ill take it from here. Talk about freedom! Jesus desires us to be free from all the stuff that weighs us down. I dunno about you but I’d rather be free than a slave to something.
Challenge
When we are under some sort of sin in our life, it has control over us.
This week, lets look at ourselves and think about things we try to hide from God, or maybe from people around us.
It’s time we take those chains off and talk to someone about it.
It’s time for us to live in freedom from sin.
