Timberline Bible School visits Slovenia

Apr 20, 2017 | News

Four students and I headed out to Slovenia on a shred missions trip. We weren’t really sure what to expect when heading there.

Once we landed in Slovenia, SFC’s Slovenia leader, Hondo Wynn, was there to pick us up. We spent the first day in the city of Maribor where Hondo and his family live. That day, Hondo explained how the week was going to look, and we started our Bible Study through the book of John. He also shared with us the dynamic of what Christianity looks like in Slovenia (which is pretty close nothing). People don’t see any need for Christianity or any religion. This was a new experience for me. I had never been in a place where people didn’t believe in anything.

For the rest of the week we went to “Rogla,” a ski resort in Slovenia. Red Bull was hosting a freestyle week there and lots of people from the surrounding area came out. It was so fun to ride in a different country the weather was around 66f/20c every day. The setup was super fun and flowy. Our goal in Rogla was to “be a light on the hill,” which is the vision of SFC. We rode up the T- Bar with people we didn’t know and had fun laps in the park. People were really confused why us Canadians and Americans were in Slovenia. That opened up some doors for conversations. It was the typical shred scene where partying was the center of the week.

One night Hondo, a student, and I went a house party after we waxed their boards. They were super confused on why we weren’t getting drunk but were still okay with just hanging out. It was cool to be a light in that place even if we didn’t see the fruit in the moment. It was cool to make new relationships with people of Slovenia but also to be part of what Hondo does out there all the time. I encourage you guys to pray for SFC Slovenia and Hondo as he and his family serve out there every day.

The coolest part of the trip for me was the discipleship time. Every breakfast/ dinner, we would take time to go through the book of John as a group. It was awesome for us as a group to go through that together. As it says in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” This verse was true for our team as we study the Word of God together.

Being able to snowboard, get into the word as a small group of guys, and be the “light” of Jesus in different country, it was one of the coolest trips that I have ever been on. It is crazy the places the Lord will take you when you choose to surrender your full life to him.

Thanks for prayers
