Things That Never End

Mar 12, 2024 | Devotionals

O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us.

Your plans for us are too numerous to list.

    You have no equal.

If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds,

I would never come to the end of them.

Psalm 40:5

Some things in life seem like they’ll never end. Waiting in line at the DMV. That terrible sound of the dentist’s tools when fixing a tooth. Watching the clock on a sunny Friday afternoon when you’re in high school. The song “Baby Shark” coming from a stuffed animal you stepped on in the middle of the night.

Usually, when we think about things that will never end, we think of bad things that we don’t want. But David wrote about “the joys of those who trust the LORD” in Psalm 40. On a never ending list of these joys would be the wonders and wonderful deeds that God has done for us. David wrote “If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.” This statement is not just a random thought coming from David. No, this statement comes after David acknowledges that God has turned to him and heard his cry. Not only did God hear David, but God pulled him out of another mess he’d created in his life.

God gave David – and God gives you – a second chance. Or it might be another second chance. Maybe it’s best understood as a never ending second chance. The things of God – his wonderful deeds – never come to an end.

  • Read all of Psalm 40. What action of God sticks out to you?

  • What would it look like if you started writing a list of the wonders God has performed in your life?

  • Do you believe that God has plans for your life that are too numerous to list? Are you aware of what those plans may be right now?
