Acts 2:45 (ESV) “And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.”
With lift ticket prices topping $150 in some places and the newest shred gear getting more and more expensive each year, we truly live in a privileged culture. Often it’s easy to think to ourselves, “It would be amazing if that wealthy family with the second home in Park City would give a bit of what they have to help those in need around us.” Many of us are living paycheck to paycheck, barely making ends meet. Resort towns are expensive after all. Shouldn’t someone else with extra time and money give to those in need?
Christ has called each of us to share with others not just what is extra in our lives, but also what we might need!
The Bible holds up a model of giving that is sacrificial. Christ has called each of us to share with others. And we are called to give not just what is extra in our lives, but what we might need! In the book of Acts, the early church was selling their own stuff so that they could help each other out! That’s certainly a step beyond what my life has sometimes looked liked: “I’ve got 3 snowboards. I could probably give away my oldest one, but I better keep a backup just in case I need that one some day.” Whether we’re bumping lifts at $9 an hour or running the place at $900 an hour. We’re called to live and give in a way that beyond what’s comfortable.
Challenge
Who is someone in your life that has unmet needs right now?
Is there a way that you might be able to help them? Warning: This might cut into your shred time or ability to eat out this month.
