Happy New Year! We’ll be starting the Weekly Winter Word off a little different this year. For the next three weeks we’ll be in a series about marriage written by our friend Andy Finch. Andy has been around SFC for years and has a huge heart for the shred community. He’s passionate about digging into the tough stuff with us and we’ll read about it in this three part series. It’s a great challenge and reminder for those married or single. Enjoy!
What is your view on marriage and where did you learn that view?
Is it from your parents, from movies, or from watching television?
Why do people even get married in a day and age where little value is put on marriage and the commitment made to one another in front of a pastor and their peers, or maybe just a friend that took an online course?
Probably the most common view of marriage today is to find a person you are very compatible with that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If they don’t make you feel that way anymore, then you need to go find your soulmate.
Genesis 2:22-24:
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
It was God’s idea to unite a man and a woman in marriage. It wasn’t the state nor some respected dude along time ago. God understands us to the core and knows what we need. We don’t need marriage, but we need God. He uses marriage to bring us closer to him. I have been amazed how God uses my marriage to show me my sin and selfishness. It prunes me so that I can be a little bit more like Christ, which should be our goal in this life: to follow Jesus.
Marriage was designed to glorify God.
