“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17 (ESV)
So there I was 40 feet in the air, desperately rolling down the windows trying to keep my body from landing super backseat, just hoping I would somehow ride away. It was a jump day for sure and I was feeling good enough to send the big jump at Hyland for the first time this season. I pulled hard off the rope, pointed my snowboard down the hill, no speed checks and sent it. The problem was, as I approached the kicker my eyes drifted upward looking for the lip and my head and body followed. I wasn’t centered. It is pretty natural and easy to get off center in life and the results can be pretty painful.
1 John 2:15-17 instructs us not to love the world, “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” It goes on to coach us that whoever does the will of God gets to live forever. That’s a pretty cool promise! I want to live.
Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,” because he perfectly demonstrates how to stay centered in God’s will. So I want to encourage you: stop. Take a second, and check yourself before you wreck yourself.
Challenge
-
Where in my life do I feel uncentered?
-
How is my love for the world taking my eyes off God’s will?
-
What is one way I will center my eyes on Jesus today? and tomorrow?
