Don’t be a lone ranger Christian

Oct 5, 2016 | Devotionals

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Acts 2: 42

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2: 46-47

Are you a follower of Jesus? If so, it’s critical to get plugged into a local church. I know that it is tempting to shred all day on Sunday, especially when you only have a precious 2 days off work and there is fresh snow on the ground. But when we turn to scriptures to see what the guys and gals that actually walked with Jesus did after He left, it’s a good bet that whatever they did is something we should aim for.

Churches around your city are praying for people like you to join in.

The book of Acts talks about what happened right away after Jesus left Earth to hang out with God. You’ll notice it’s not called “church” but what did they do? They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, they ate together, they praised God together, and they proclaimed the Good News. Those activities are the same things a good church does every week today. They didn’t try to do it alone then, and you shouldn’t now.

You may say, “Church is boring, and I haven’t found anywhere that people are enough like me to really connect.” Churches around your city are praying for people like you to join in. They might not have anyone that’s much like you yet, but you have a lot to add to a vibrant church community. You have perspective on shred culture, on life, and God’s word that they need. If you’re looking for a church with just the right music, gives you exactly what you need spiritually, and doesn’t take any extra effort from you, you simply won’t find one.

Find a Church in your area that values God’s word, teaches from it, and seeks to love others like Jesus did and invest there! Hang out with people that aren’t like you. Give your money to further their mission. Commit to being there even when you don’t feel like it. You won’t regret it.

Challenge

What do you look for in a church? (Ideas: worship, good preaching, free food, community events, location)
If you don’t have a home church, why not? If you do, what is your favorite part about it?
Is there someone you know who you can invite to church with you this week that might be blessed by it?
